Indian healthcare outsourcing expands horizons

The maturity of the Indian outsourcing scene is reflected in the direction in which healthcare process outsourcing is headed. From basic medical transcription and business process outsourcing (BPO) services, Indian outsourcing is moving into core fields like testing, drug discovery, research and development and other process driven work. According to a report by Zinnov Research and Consulting, healthcare outsourcing revenue from the US will grow to $38 billion during 2007–08, as opposed to the $115 million Indian healthcare service providers garnered in 2005–06. Clinical research especially is going to be India’s forte in the future by virtue of the huge untapped potential the country harbors in this area. The clinical research outsourcing (CRO) market in India has been developing rapidly since 2001 and is expected to cross $10 billion by 2010, at an annual growth rate of 64 percent. But experts emphasize that India can consolidate this market only by putting in place clear and dedicated processes.
